3 Fastest EVs and PHEVs of 2022 According to TrueCar – MotorBiscuit

Many people want to buy an EV or PHEV to be environmentally friendly. However, getting an EV or PHEV can also satisfy your speed cravings. The fastest EVs and PHEVs will not be cheap like any other fast car, but they can easily go faster than gas-powered cars. Here’s a look at three of the fastest EVs and PHEVs of the 2022 model year.

1. The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition is an all-electric sports car

As TrueCar wrote, the Lucid Air is one of the newest EVs on the market as a fully electric luxury sedan, starting at about $89,000. It’s so new that it’s still not widely available. But while the standard version of the Air is a capable and luxurious EV, it’s not the fastest option available. Car shoppers who have a need for speed should look at the Dream Edition of the Air.

The Air Dream Edition starts at just under $171,000, adding a lot of power to the EV. The standard version of the Air only has a single electric motor that gets 480 hp. The Dream Edition, meanwhile, gets two electric motors, and combined, they get 933 hp. The Dream Edition Performance costs the same as the Dream Edition with a similar setup, only with 1,111 hp. This allows the EV to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds.

2. The 2022 Ferrari SF90 Stradale is a fast PHEV Ferrari 

Ferrari is no stranger to fast cars, and like many other automakers, the Italian automaker is pivoting to hybrids and EVs. One of Ferrari’s latest offerings in that segment is the SF90 Stradale PHEV. This Ferrari comes with three electric motors that work together with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine to get about 986 hp combined. 

The Italian automaker claims that this setup will allow the Stradale to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.5 seconds. However, in real-world testing, it managed to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds. This makes the Stradale the fastest Ferrari ever made, though it’s by no means a perfect car. 

It’s still a Ferrari, and as TrueCar wrote, it will be costly. The Stradale starts at about $515,000, so it will not be affordable for most people. On top of that, it’s a two-seater. This may not be a big deal for folks with multiple cars, but it does make this Ferrari impractical for daily driving, especially for folks with kids. 

1. The 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid is still ludicrously fast

While the Ferrari got close, the fastest EV or PHEV on the market right now is still the Tesla Model S Plaid. The standard Model S is a luxury sedan that starts at about $106,000. It seats five people, has a lot of technology, and its powertrain gets a good amount of power and range. 

However, the Model S Plaid pushes the limits of Tesla by improving the car’s power output significantly. This trim starts at over $130,000, allowing the Model S to generate about 1,020 hp. Those powerful electric motors allow the Tesla to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.99 seconds. This makes the Model S barely faster than the Stradale but at a fraction of the price tag. Plus, the Model S is a true EV, while the Stradale is a PHEV.
