The 2022 Simola Hillclimb is almost here, and spectators of the event can be assured of plenty of action from an array of cars. As always, the action kicks off on Friday (6 May) with Classic Car Friday, followed by the King of the Hill that will run throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Seasoned competitors and new entries will take on the 1.9km Simola Hill as they compete in what has indeed become one of the premier events on the South African motorsport calendar.

Participants will compete in three categories: Road-going Saloon Cars and Supercars, the Modified Saloon Cars, and specialised Single Seaters and Sports Prototypes.

Class A winner returns

Class A is filled with the most competitors, and the cars drivers take on the hill are street-legal machines that you’d find on showroom floors. According to the regulations, “only standard road tyres are permitted that match the original manufacturer’s specification, and the limited changes allowed are restricted to safety-critical features such as a racing seat with harness, and a roll cage if applicable.”

Cars partaking in this category include a variety of cars, all ranging from V8 sedans to high-performance supercars. There are even electric vehicles competing for class honours.

2021 Class A winner Jean-Pierre van der Walt returns in 2022, but has opted for a Porsche (991.2) 911 Turbo S over his 2016 911 GT3 RS – also from the same generation. Competing in Class A4 for six-cylinder four-wheel drive cars, Van der Walt set a winning time of 45.858 seconds last year.

The retuning champion says: “Last year, I managed to do a 44.5sec time during practice in the GT3 RS, and the Turbo S will be quicker off the line with the benefit of four-wheel drive. But it won’t have the aerodynamic downforce that is crucial through the Esses at the top of the course. But I’m hoping to beat my time from last year and aim for the 43-second mark.”
