The drag race held at Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a chance for anyone with a street legal car or truck to run for fun. Vehicles range from classic souped-up cars to the daily driver.

Gladwin City Council member and Thunder on the Strip volunteer, Sarah Kile, said it was an amazing event.

Kile said with organizer Tammy Hawblitzel retiring from the event and new people, Jason Schuster and Karen and Mike Moore taking over, she was happy to see the event continue. She said the new organizers, with Hawblitzel helping this event, did a wonderful job.

“People were excited to be there,” Kile said. “It was a group of people coming together, which this community needs.”

Greg Jennings was one of the excited spectators.

“Good weather, good friends and fast cars,” said Jennings of Bay City. “What could be better?”

Jennings tries to always attend the annual event, noting he’s only missed a couple of years. He said one thing he loves is that win or lose, people are still friends, and they are having fun.

Kile was also touched by the memorial paid to Bill Smith during the event. Kile said there was not a community event that Smith, who died in December, and his wife LaVel weren’t involved in.
